| SPAIN / Golf Ulzama will represent Spain in the 2012 World Finals |
The Thirteenth National Final of the Lancia-Jeep World Corporate Golf Challenge was held during the first weekend of December at the prestigious La Manga Club in Murcia. The teams competed for a spot in the World Final, to be held in South Africa in May 2012.
The event began on Friday the 25th with a welcome dinner for the players at Restaurante Indias in Las Lomas. At the end of the dinner, a video was shown with images of the tournament during the regional phases and the World Finals. The start times were also assigned at the restaurant, and so began the National Final.
Although it had rained heavily on the preceding days, the players enjoyed perfect weather on the course on Saturday. All of the starts were made from Tee 1 on the South field from 8:30 AM and on, and although much was at stake, the players demonstrated great amiability among themselves. At the end of the first day, the team of Signo Editores (of which José Rueda was a part of), one of the stalwarts of this event, followed closely by Conval Sport.
The next day, Sunday the 27th, began the second and final day of the National Final. With a reverse starting order from Saturday, the players began again at Tee 1 on the South field. The organization provided hospitality tents halfway through the course and on the 18th hole, where players were supplied with soft drinks, water, snacks, fruit and chocolate candy, and could turn in their score cards. There, the nerves of the players were obviously, as it would be announced shortly which team would be the representative of Spain at the World Finals in South Africa.
The awards ceremony was held on the same green of the 18th hole and during the ceremony, it was announced at last there that Alex Laredo and Rafa Beunza of the Golf Ulzama team were the winners. This was a surprise, because they had finished the first day sharing last place with two other teams, eight points behind the leaders. However, they marked an impressive 70 points on their card on Sunday, by far the best score of the day, to climb to first place. Therefore, they will be representing Spain at the World Finals in South Africa in the spring of 2012. The runner-up, Ges Seguros (Pelayo Benjumea and Pedro Benjumea from Sevilla), will represent Spain in the Ibero-American Final in Puerto Vallarta, México, also in the spring of next year.
The gala dinner was held in milder spirits at the Principe Felipe Hotel, the official resort of the National Final. During dinner, a new video with images of the 2011 World Final was projected, and thanks were given to all of the sponsors that made a new edition of this tournament.
